Out-of-State Pup Buyers: How to Transport Your Pup Home Safely

Bringing your pup home, no matter how far you live, is one of the most magical moments you'll share with your new family member. And while distance might make you wonder about the logistics, getting your pup home can be just as memorable, no matter the miles in between.

The methods we recommend aren’t just about convenience—they’re designed to keep your pup’s stress levels at a minimum and help solidify your bond right from the start. After all, this is their first big adventure, and we want to set you both up for success!

Quick Overview: Safe Travel Methods for Your New Pup

When it comes to bringing your pup home, we suggest two stress-free options:

  1. Flying with Your Pup (in-cabin)

  2. Using a Trusted Flight Nanny

These methods are designed to keep your pup safe, calm, and happy during the trip. And, of course, there are also options I strongly recommend avoiding, like cargo transport or long ground transport services. We’ll cover why in a bit.

How We Prepare Your Pup for Travel

By the time your pup is ready to meet you, we’ve already done a lot of the groundwork to make sure they’re ready for their big journey home.

We start by crate training, so they’re familiar with their travel carrier and see it as a cozy, safe space. We also take them on car rides and gradually introduce them to new people, sounds, and environments to help build their confidence and reduce anxiety in unfamiliar settings.

All of this preparation helps your pup adapt to the flight and drive home. This makes for a smoother, calmer journey home.

If you’re working with a different breeder, I’d recommend having a conversation to make sure your pup gets this prep work done before flying! It makes a world of difference on go-home day.

Option 1: Flying with Your Pup (You as the Owner)

If you're able to fly yourself, it’s a great way to personally bring your pup home. We’ll meet you right at the airport for a handoff!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Most major airlines will let you bring a pup in-cabin as long as their carrier fits under your seat. Your Bernedoodle pup should fit no problem! Just make sure your carrier is airline-approved.

  • Airlines like United even allow you to book the seat next to you for extra room!

  • The average fee to bring a pup on board is around $100, but check with your airline for specifics.

  • Sometimes airlines have a limit on how many pets can join a flight, so make sure you book tickets early.

If you want to go all out, there’s also an airline called BARK Air, which lets your pup roam the cabin (and make new puppy friends) on flights between LA, NYC, and a couple international cities. It’s definitely a (pricey) luxury, but one worth considering!

What to Bring:

  • A comfortable carrier that fits under your seat

  • Potty pads (for those nervous accidents)

  • Chew toys and a soft toy for comfort

  • A collapsible water bowl and treats

  • A leash, poop bags, and wipes

  • A hand-held fan (if it’s a hot day)

  • And, of course, plenty of cuddles!

Option 2: Flight Nannies

If you’re unable to fly yourself, our flight nannies are a great option. We trust them fully after having completing multiple incident-free flights with other Olive Branch pups. They’re trained to keep your pup safe, entertained, and calm throughout the trip, and they know all the tricks for making airport travel as smooth and as possible.

Flight nannies should follow strict protocols to avoid exposing your pup to germs. They should also be experts at making sure your pup feels secure during the flight. When you find the right flight nanny, it’s a stress-free way to bring your new fur baby home without having to handle the logistics yourself.

And that moment when you pick them up from the airport? Nothing compares!

Methods to Avoid: Cargo and Long Ground Transport

While cargo and long-distance ground transport may seem like convenient options, we strongly recommend avoiding them.

  • Cargo transport can be extremely stressful for pups. They’re separated from people, and the conditions can be overwhelming and unsafe.

  • Long ground transport services take days, leaving your pup cooped up for extended periods, which can lead to stress and anxiety. Not how you want to start your life together!

To wrap it up…

Whether you’re flying in to pick up your pup or entrusting them to a flight nanny, the most important thing is making sure they feel safe, secure, and loved from the start. These early moments with your pup set the stage for a lifelong bond, so it’s worth going the extra mile to ensure their first journey is a positive experience.

Remember, distance doesn’t have to be a barrier, especially when you find a breeder you trust. (We’ve got some great tips on how to find the right breeder for you—check out this blog.) With the right support and preparation, bringing your pup home can be a magical experience, no matter how far away you are.
